Job Context

    Chemonics seeks an Environmental Monitoring and Mapping Specialist for the USAID-funded Bangladesh Ecosystems/Protibesh Activity. The activity aims to build the Government of Bangladesh`s (GOB) capacity to respond to a wide array of threats to biodiversity conservation in collaboration with civil society organizations and community stakeholders. It will also collaborate with and engage local partners in the effective management, protection and governance of critical forest and aquatic ecosystems while advancing economic incentives to further biodiversity conservation.

Job Responsibilities

  • This position will be primarily responsible to manage activities and processes of the USAID Ecosystems/Protibesh Activity to strengthen the Government of Bangladesh’s (GOB) capacity in using SMART and other monitoring tools for conservation area management to respond to a wide array of threats to biodiversity in collaboration with civil society organizations and community stakeholders.
  • The specific tasks of the Environmental Monitoring and Mapping Specialist include the following:
  • Lead development, capacity building, and technical assistance to the use and implementation of the Spatial Monitoring and Reporting Tool (SMART) in project sites, working in close collaboration with staff of the Bangladesh Forest Department.
  • Conceptualize and support implementation of SMART Connect for conservation area management, with the aim of upscaling the tool for nationwide use.
  • Lead the projects support to citizen reporting on environmental issues, and other monitoring systems as needed in close collaboration with the Department of Fisheries, and Department of Environment.
  • Lead development and management of GIS and related mapping exercises for project and counterpart needs.
  • Attend events/training/meetings/workshops as required to keep updated on activities being performed and share/disseminate environmental monitoring feedback to ensure consistent understanding among the team.

Educational Requirements

  • University degree or advanced degree in a relevant field. Experience in environment monitoring and field data collection, management, analysis, and reporting for forest habitats, wetlands, wildlife and/or similar contexts.


Additional Requirements

  • Prior experience and an understanding of the Bangladesh natural resource management (NRM), forestry, biology, environmental science, environmental policy, or a related sector.
  • Prior experience and understanding of SMART, including SMART Connect.
  • Qualifications and/or experience in using GIS for conservation and ability to prepare maps, collate and process GIS data and conduct spatial analysis.
  • Understanding of other environmental monitoring systems and tools is a plus.
  • Understanding and experience preferred with existing relevant government, donor, or other relevant monitoring efforts in Bangladesh, especially for forests, wetlands, and wildlife.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skill in English and good understanding of computer applications.
  • Ability and commitment to work under pressure.
  • Willingness and ability to visit project sites, good team spirit and interpersonal skill is required. Other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
